The Story Behind Red Packet

The tradition of giving red packets has been practiced for many centuries dated back during the Sung Dynasty. The story behind red packet begins in the village of Chang-Chieu in China. According to traditional beliefs or mythology, a demon had destroyed the village and even the strongest warriors could not slay the demon.

It is believed that a young orphan managed to kill the demon using his enchanted sabre. To express their gratitude, the villagers decided to reward the young orphan with a red pouch that is filled with gold coins. The red pouch was essential for gold coins back then. The red pouch given by the villagers to the young orphan symbolizes further well-being, prosperity and happiness.

As time goes by, the red pouch developed into a paper red packet to fit the paper money that circulates today! Today, the red packet is given to family members as a symbol of wishing them the same well-being, prosperity and happiness that the villagers wanted to wish the boy.
